The Challenge: Bringing Smart Infrastructure to an Aging Terminal
Dublin Airport is one of Europe’s busiest airports, serving over 30 million passengers annually. Ensuring a safe, efficient, and comfortable passenger experience is critical—especially when it comes to air quality monitoring and the operation of key mobility assets like lifts, escalators, and travelators.
However, Terminal 1, the airport’s older terminal, lacked a Building Management System (BMS) for lifts and escalators, making it difficult to:
Monitor air quality at terminal gates in real-time.
Ensure uninterrupted operation of escalators, lifts, and travelators, which are vital for passengers with reduced mobility.
Quickly respond to asset failures, which could result in fines for non-compliance.
The Solution: Smart Airport Infrastructure with Semvar & CreevX
Working alongside CreevX as a systems integrator and device manufacturer, we deployed a comprehensive smart buildings solution using the Semvar platform and CreevX’s GPIO LoRaWAN devices.
1️⃣ Real-Time Air Quality Monitoring at Terminal Gates
✅ Sensors track temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels to ensure passenger comfort and safety.
✅ Automated alerts & trend analysis help optimize ventilation and indoor air quality.
2️⃣ Smart Monitoring for Lifts, Escalators & Travelators (Terminal 1 – No BMS Connectivity)
✅ Live status tracking – Visibility into which direction escalators are moving (up/down) and whether they are operational.
✅ Fault & Emergency Detection – Instant alerts if a fault state is detected or the emergency stop is pressed.
✅ Automated Staff Notifications – When an incident occurs, SMS and push notifications are sent to on-ground airport staff for rapid response.
The Results: Smarter Airport Operations & Improved Passenger Experience
📊 24/7 visibility into critical assets with real-time monitoring.
🚀 Faster response times to equipment failures, minimizing downtime & compliance risks.
👥 Better accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility by ensuring lifts & escalators are operational.
💨 Improved air quality monitoring for healthier terminal environments.
